BMW was making way cool V8 powered stuff in the 1950's like the 507 roadster and we all know they were making cool stuff like the 2002 and 3.0 CSL in the '70's. But what was this company doing in the 60's? I can google and find out what models they were making but why does nobody ever mention 1960's BMW's? What got them their big break to get big in the 70's?

IIRC the 507 broke them financially so they couldn't make anything cool.

Because everyone was buying domestics in the 60s.
When Studebakers and higher-end AMC products were going down the drain in the 70s, all the yuppies who used to buy them bought European instead stuff to show how much more educated and worldly they were than everyone else.
60s BMWs were mostly a leftist plot that was took hold in the 70s to destroy the domestics manufacturers by using the Vietnam War and the Nixon admininistration. If you could get Americans in communist cars, then you could get Americans to join a communist party.
Unfortunately, their plan didn't work due to their euro-snobbery. Volkswagen had a similar plan with the Beetle and the bus and it was arguably more successfull. Luckily the great American Gods—the almighty Big Three (the real Holy Trinity btw)—were able push back these communist invaders.
Congratulations for reading this much sarcasm. You truly are a saint. Truthfully, I have no idea what BMW was doing in the 60s.

Where was BMW in the 60's? Bavaria
But seriously, it was a lean time for them. They were having financial difficulties. they tried expanding into the entry level market with their 700. The 2002 is just a continuation of their 60's design with the 'New Class'.

They sold variations of the Neue Klasse with moderate success, and did some other cool stuff like buying out Glas and having their way with some of those cars.
The 2002's popularity is really what catapulted them to '70s success.

Are we talking 'Murica or 'Yurup? Because in the 70s BMW was mostly throwing out 5-series and 3-series sedans. The Neue Klasse, the 02s and E9s were things of the mid-late 60s.

Turning themselves around financially under the watchful protection of the Quandts, after having narrowly avoided a takeover by Daimler-Benz. They had the Neue Klasse, which formed the basis for pretty much all of their models in the '60s and on into the '70s, a la Chrysler K-Cars, and is very well regarded by BMW enthusiasts as the car that basically brought the company back from ruin. The famous 2002 and 2000CS are derivatives of the New Class
